“Just One More Year…”: The Retirement Trap You Never Signed Up For
Why ‘staying a little longer’ could cost you more than money.
Ever told yourself, “I’ll just stay one more year at work, then I’ll enjoy life”?
Spoiler: that “one more year” rarely stays one. Before you know it, your calendar’s full, your knees ache, and your grandkids are asking why you’ve been missing all the fun.
I imagined retirement would be bliss: lazy mornings with tea on the terrace (though I don’t have one but that’s not the point), hikes in the hills that felt like adventures, lunches with ladies instead of tiresome meetings. Freedom, finally!
Then reality whispered: “Just one more year.” And another. Work piled up. The computer at work become a hard taskmaster …. That dream of freedom slowly felt soooo far away.
I thought, “Well, if I stay a little longer, I’ll be ready then, and I’ll save more…” while my health and energy become weary and my family memories were quietly gathering dust.
Here’s the truth: time doesn’t wait for your career comfort zone. Every “just one more year” quietly steals your healthiest years. Choosing obligations over yourself doesn’t make you a hero. It’s a trade-off you can’t reverse. Freedom and living your best life don’t start tomorrow. They start the moment you decide they will start. So I bit the bullet and at 55 I went for it. And once I had made the decision I knew that it was the right one. I wanted to grasp life by the whatsits whilst I still could.
A few bite-sized lessons I learned to save yourself from the loop:
- Don’t fall for the “one more year” trap, make the decision now.
- Health is wealth, literally. Don’t trade your vitality for your obligations.
- Prioritise your connections with family, friend and yourself.
- Taking Small steps today = big freedom tomorrow.
Freedom isn’t a date on the calendar, it’s a mindset. Those “one more year” moments? They’re a lie dressed as ‘sensible’. Reclaim your time before it quietly slips through your fingers. You deserve life, not just the next task on the list.

You’re between chapters – and this moment matters more than you think.
